Pretty in Pink

Pink is a lovely colour to incorporate into your wedding theme. It comes in various shades ranging from the soft baby pink to the more bold and daring hot pink. Depending on where your wedding is and during which time of the year it takes place, pink can be used throughout. Team it with purple, black, brown, white or even teal and you can’t go wrong.

I did a wedding recently with hot pink and we put it together with royal purple. The mood was that of a forest so we put added a lot of brown twigs and dark green foliage. It looks spectacular with candles and just the right amount of lighting focused on giant urns of flowers and table centres made of woven deep brown twigs and bark.

Calligraphy

It’s a relatively new trend in the Sri Lankan wedding industry but something which seems essential if you’re aiming for an elegant affair.

Calligraphy is the beautiful way of writing and is a visual art. According to Wikipedia “Modern calligraphy ranges from functional hand-lettered inscriptions and designs to fine-art pieces where the abstract expression of the handwritten mark may or may not compromise the legibility of the letters. Classical calligraphy differs from typography and non-classical hand-lettering, though a calligrapher may create all of these; characters are historically disciplined yet fluid and spontaneous, at the moment of writing”.

Nowadays in terms of weddings, it can be used for invitations, envelopes, R.S.V.P. cards, gift registry cards, place cards, favours and much more. There is a different font and alphabet where calligraphy is involved and I know a few Sri Lankan’s who are awesome at it. Came across some work by Laura Hooper which I wanted to share with you.

Yellow Inspiration

I am a huge fan of Yellow. Recently I saw sunshine yellow being combined with black and burnt yellow which looked stunning. The bridesmaids at the wedding looked positively lovely. I think it blends really well with a Sri Lankan complexion. It seems to be a favourite (although many may not be bold enough to try it) and well it is the colour of sunshine and new beginning after all.

Wedding Cakes!

Ive been meaning to write a post on wedding cakes for quite sometime now but have been busy with weddings.

In my opinion wedding cakes are an important part of any wedding reception. In the past a lot of couples have opted for structured fake cakes but of recent i have been seeing more and more people opting to get real cakes which can later be cut and served to guests.

At a time when wedding cake pieces are expensive due to the use of expensive ingredients like nuts and cherries etc having a structure made of real cake may not be such a bad idea.

I came across some lovely cakes which I wanted to share with you. They all look so yummy!

A Black and White affair

A friend of mine is getting married in November with a black and white theme thus the timing for this post.

It is quite uncommon in Sri Lanka to have a black and white themed wedding, particularly due to the fact that many elders have preconceived notions about weddings. However black and white make a lovely combination. It spells out mysterious and pure all at the same time.

In terms of flowers there is a wide range to choose from; chrysanthemums, Hydrangea, Peonies, Roses, Jasmine and Lilies just to name a few. Red or purple is perfect to add, in order to give a hint of colour to the celebration.

Pretty in Purple

Purple or shades of it seems to be a favourite with brides. Purple is the colour of royalty and nobility and happens to be my favourite colour. It comes in so many different shades and can be anything between violet and indigo.

The most common purple flowers available in Sri Lanka are the Orchid and the Lotus but if your budget can accommodate it you can go to the extent of including purple roses. It can be teamed with white, silver, grey,pink, pink and peach, green, creams and pastels.

Wedding Favors - Cookies!

Presenting your guests with a wedding favor is a nice way of saying “thank you for coming and being apart of our special day”. They aren’t a very popular gesture in Sri Lanka but I feel that if people went to the trouble of having them, they would be much appreciated. A few couples give away the five sugared almonds but many do not go beyond that. This is possibly due to the fact that since most weddings in Sri Lanka are quite large to say the least, it wouldn’t be very cost effective.

I came across a lovely cookie recipe which I thought would be an ideal favor to giveaway. Its easy enough to make at home if your looking at cutting costs.

Cookie Recipe (makes over a hundred cookies)
2 (500ml) cups butter
680 g chocolate chips
4 (1000ml) cups flour
2 (500ml) cups brown sugar
2 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
1 tsp salt
2 (500ml) cups sugar
500 g Grated Cadbury chocolate
5 (1250 ml) cups blended oatmeal
4 eggs
2 tsp baking powder
2 tsp vanilla
3 cups (375 ml) chopped nuts (optional)
Measure oatmeal, and blend in a blender to a fine powder. Cream the butter and both sugars. Add eggs and vanilla, mix together with flour, oatmeal, salt, baking powder, and bicarbonate of soda. Add chocolate chips, grated Chocolate and nuts. Roll into balls, and place two inches apart on a cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes at 375 degrees (180 C).
There are some amazing packaging available here which you could gift it in. A small cookie jar is ideal with a small thank you tag attached, but glass packages are expensive.

Green Inspiration

Green is such a diverse and beautiful colour. Ive seen it used only at a few weddings though in Colombo. I found some amazing pictures which I’m sure you’ll agree are beautiful. If the right shade of green is picked I’m sure it could serve as the central theme for any wedding.

Green can easily be teamed with other colours like pink, purple, brown, white, white and black. Pink and green are two extremes on the colour palette and thus make a wonderful contrast. Purple on the other hand ads depth to the green. White, black and green are simply elegant and if a mint green is teamed with a dark chocolate that would make for a classy wedding. The possibilities are endless. Its important though that the right shade of green is mixed with other shades of colour. Bottle green, sage green, lime green, sea green, olive green, mint, apple green are just a few shades Ive come across.

When it comes to bouquets and floral decor we have Hydrangeas, Chrysanthemums, Orchids, Anthuriams and green berries to choose from in Colombo. So don’t set yourself short, go green all the way!
